Durin — Building the Future of Mining

At Durin, we drill for mineral exploration companies. Despite being a $6B industry, exploration drilling technology has hardly changed in over 60 years. Our mission is to change that. The first step is retrofitting drilling rigs with automated controls and real-time data streams to increase speed, efficiency, and reliability—quickly followed by the production of our own equipment.

Building the Rig

We are hiring a geotechnical engineer to analyze geological and drilling data to provide insights into rock formations, structures, and subsurface conditions affecting drilling operations. You will collaborate closely with our engineering and operations teams, improving systems in the field daily or weekly.

Objectives:

• Analyze the mechanical behavior of different rock formations and how they interact with drilling equipment
• Collaborate with engineering to optimize drill designs and automation software for optimal drill performance, speed, and core recovery in various geological conditions
• Use simulation software and laboratory data to model rock behavior under drilling forces, vibrations, and stress conditions
• Conduct field tests to evaluate drill performance in diverse rock types and recommend design improvements
• Develop and implement strategies to minimize drillbit wear, improve penetration rates, and reduce drilling costs
• Produce technical reports and documentation on findings, providing recommendations for design optimizations based on geomechanical data

Competencies: 

• Experience in rock mechanics, geomechanics, or geotechnical analysis, ideally in mining, construction, or drilling industries
• Proficiency in geomechanical modeling software and CAD tools
• Strong understanding of the mechanical properties of rocks and their response to stress, pressure, and drilling forces
• Field experience in drilling operations and geotechnical surveys
• Knowledge of mineral exploration techniques and drilling equipment
• Experience with field testing and working in rugged environments

Compensation

For this role everyone, including the founder, is taking a salary of $120,000. We believe in investing every dollar back into the company to achieve our ambitious goals. While money isn't our driving motivator, we ensure you will be taken care of financially.

We offer healthcare coverage (medical, dental, vision), all meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) are covered when you’re at headquarters, and we can help provide housing close to the office. In addition, the headquarters is equipped with two bedrooms, a full kitchen, and a high-end shower.

You will be given generous equity.

Requirements

• Must be willing to work from our headquarters in El Segundo.
• Must be willing to work extended hours and weekends as needed.
